ICT Cluster Meeting Mangere East Thursday 10 September 2015

Anthony gave us an overview of Mangere East’s ICT journey, and how this is constantly evolving

This led to a discussion on various cloud based options, and experiences from other teachers present.

Steve Voisey from TTS:
Gave a presentation of the SAMR model and how technology should enhance it, by adding more capability to do things differently and creatively, and to collaboratively engage in higher thinking skills:

Substitution - Device acts as a direct substitute with no functional change

Augmentation - Device acts as a direct tool substitute with functional improvement

Modification - technology allows for significant redesign

Redefinition - Technology allows for creation of new tasks previously inconceivable

As we go forward in SAMR there is more creation and more collaboration.

We ended with mixed discussion soon after 5pm.

Our next meeting will be in Week 3 of Term 4 at Papatoetoe Intermediate.  This is a new school to our group as they have expressed in the things we are doing, and are keen to join our meetings.  More details later.

Issues or frustrations:
*Breakages - iPads - screens, updates
*teachers not using initiative - one solution is a problem solving sheet - Steve to put on Google Docs
*lack of computers for student use, when using Google Docs
*using iPads for Google Docs (not ideal) - solution: use Chromebooks
*Computers in homes program (Finlayson Park)
* using iPads for things they are best at - hands on apps for juniors, Explain Everything, photos, video and evaluation, portability, etc.
*Websites - wix - build your own web site, Google, spike@school.com


Getting Staff on board:
ICT Staff meeting - at least one per term
Syndicate Meetings - have ICT bites - short presentations
Teacher mentoring
Barriers - time constraints, lack of confidence,
Teacher inquiry - e learning component - staff choose an ICT aspect as a goal or next learning step.


Suggestions:
Bring back Smackdowns to our meetings - short sharp presentations 2 mins max each

1:1 schools saw greater responsibility from students about looking after the devices.

When there are 1:1 devises kids take much better care of them

I was at a Google Docs Master Class today.  These two Google map games were shared with us and I am hoping to try them out with my class to develop critical thinking skills and to encourage digital exploration of the world.  You might want to have a go as well.

https://geoguessr.com/ It's a geo game that uses Google Maps. It shows you a (more or less) random place in Street View mode and you have to work out where in the world you are. It's a great game to play with your students to improve their observation, reasoning, logic, and of course mapping skills.

Constitute - the world's constitutions

The Comparative Constitutions Project cataloged and tagged nearly 350 themes, so people can easily find and compare specific constitutional material. This ranges from the fairly general, such as “Citizenship” and “Foreign Policy,” to the very specific, such as “Suffrage and turnouts” and “Judicial Autonomy and Power.”

ICT Planning ahead ...where to next? Decisions to be made.

ICT provides the digital tools to help make the pedagogy work. Teachers need PD in ICT and pedagogy to be able to make the best use of the technology.

Look at TKI e learning planning document. Link: http://elearning.tki.org.nz/

Choose questions from TKI survey to ask staff about their ICT level. Say we are just seeking data so we can personalise your ICT PD.

Working with technology and e learning not just for e learning classes but the whole school. Teachers are on a learning journey, as are students.

Now is the best time to start on ICT PD because the infrastructure is established, (fibre, UFB, fast wireless etc)


Gradual move to cloud based technology. Start looking at options.
Cloud based options: there are many but here are a few. Google Apps, Office 365, iCloud.
IPad/tablet cloud based apps such as Edmodo, Evernote.

Storybook on-line - worth looking at.
Twitter is a good source of e learning help. Follow educationalists like Kevin Honeycutt

Barriers/solutions to ICT development:
Need for teacher PD. One idea: Have an ICT component on teacher appraisals.

Need time to explore and become confident and familiar with programs/apps,
Confidence in using devices - comes with practice.


Availability of devices - home and school - BYOD or provide, or both? Parent rent to buy options. Zero interest store specials. Parents qualify for school discounts through TTS.


Lack of internet access and parent support at home still a problem for some.


Ability to relate digital technology to current pedagogy. ICT is the tool - needs to be driven
by
pedagogy.

Connectivity ..need time to buddy up with colleagues and mentors ...enthusiasm spreads!
Not hierarchical change but teachers working with teachers.

Upskilling parents of kids ...Finlayson Park School has been running after-school parents classes for 10 years. Parents are more computer literate and more involved in kids' school work. Offering free internet for close families.

Digital books v libraries v internet. Changing habits and preferences of each generation. Digital natives more likely to choose technology.

Chromebooks v iPads; tablets v laptops. Chromebooks are well suited to cloud technology, especially Google Apps, but iPads are excellent tools in different situations- open ended/ creation apps best.  Give kids the choice of device for a purpose and let them make mistakes. Kids should be working with different devices for different purposes.

Need to develop a culture of collaborative learning.
Transformational learning - look for personal transformational moments.
A whole bunch of new literacies emerging.

We need to be developing collaborative, creative students for future workforces!
